September 30, 2011: Tropical Storm Quiel is preparing for landfall

Tropical Strom Quiel (Nalgae) has intensified to a typhoon and threatens the area of Northern Luzon. Landfall is now expected along Palanan-Divilacan Bay in less than 36 hours.

According to the latest PAGASA weather bulletin, issued this morning at 5:00a.m., Typhoon Quiel (Nalgae) is situated at 770km East of Aparri, Cagayan (17.6°N, 129.9°E) as deducted from radar, satellite and surface data. It is moving westwards at 24km/h. The typhoon is expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon and will bring scattered to widespread rains over Southern Luzon and Western Visayas. It presented maximum sustainable winds of 130km/h near the centre and gustiness of up to 160km/h.

An additional strengthening of this typhoon is forecasted within the next 36 hours, prior to its predicted landfall over Northern Luzon. Quiel (Nalgae) could become a Category 3 Typhoon by Saturday following the last forecast.

Public storm warning signals have been emitted for several regions in Luzon such as Cagayan, Isabela and the Babuyan group of islands, which are expected to experience strong winds (45-60 km/h) in the following hours.
